Dr. Nagesh Tamarapalli, AMD India Design Center, Bangalore.
Title of the talk: Manufacturing Yield and its Impact for Complex SoCs
Time: 09:00 -- 10:00
Date: 2nd March
Venue: Room 254
Abstract:
Semiconductor yield has traditionally been limited by random
particle-defect based issues. However, as the feature sizes reduced
to 90nm and below, systematic mechanism-limited yield loss began to
appear as a substantial component in yield loss. In addition, it is
becoming clear that ramping yield would take longer and final yields
would not reach historical norms. A key factor for not reaching
previously attained yield levels is the interaction between design
and manufacturing. Yield losses in the newer processes include
functional defects, parametric defects and issues with testing. Each
of these sources of yield loss needs to be analyzed and understood
by designers and tool developers. The objective of this presentation
is to give a glimpse of the various yield issues and the impact they
can have on semiconductor companies.
Biography:
Dr. Nagesh Tamarapalli is a Fellow with AMD India Design Center in
Bangalore, India, where he is engaged in DFT and manufacturing test
development for the next generation low-power Accelerated Processing
Units (APUs). Prior to AMD, he was with Mentor Graphics DFT group where
he worked on logic BIST, test compression and diagnosis tools. He has
published in leading test conferences such as International Test
Conference, Asian Test Symposium and journals such IEEE Transactions on
CAD. He is the co-inventor of 15 approved US patents in the area of
testing. He holds MS in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of
Technology, Kharagpur, India and PhD in Electrical Engineering from
McGill University, Montreal, Canada.

Time: 11:00 -- 12:00
Date: 3rd March
Venue: Room 254
Abstract:
In this talk I will trace the development of Computers in India from its beginning in 1955 to 2010. History will be presented by identifying break points, when and why they occurred and how they changed the course of computer development in India. The journey through history had many bumps and taught us many lessons which I will attempt to explain.

Dr. Manish Gupta, Director of IBM Research - India.
Title of the talk: IT Innovations for Emerging Markets: An Opportunity for Leadership.
Time: 11:00 -- 12:00
Date: 2nd March
Venue: Room 254
Abstract:
We are entering an exciting era where information technology is being used in an increasingly instrumented world to make it run better. The inefficiencies in how the world operates today (e.g. in industries like transportation, energy and healthcare) have been estimated to be around
$15 Trillion annually. We describe how some of these inefficiencies can be eliminated by applying analytics over data being collected in real time. We introduce several unique challenges faced in emerging markets like India, for example, much larger scales of operations (for anything involving people), lower price points, and a unique environment exemplified by factors like the need to handle noisy data, low penetration of personal computers. These challenges represent an opportunity for leapfrog innovation and global leadership in those areas. We present several examples of such innovations. One of them is Spoken Web, our attempt to create a new world wide web, accessible over the (mobile) phone network, for the masses in countries like India. The Spoken Web platform facilitates easy creation of user-generated content that populates (voice sites), allows contextual traversal of voice sites interconnected via hyperlinks based on the HyperSpeech Transfer Protocol, and provides simple search and navigation capabilities over this audio content. We present several additional examples of innovations driven by the unique needs of emerging markets. We describe areas of success as well as outstanding issues that will require further advances in computing and business model innovations to achieve truly transformational impact.

Title of the talk: Zero Knowledge Protocols.
Time: 14:00 -- 15:00
Date: 2nd March
Venue: Room 254
Abstract:
Mathematical proofs are typically 'full disclosure' proofs. One tries to prove the validity of a statement through carefully crafted proof steps and convinces the verifier on the validity. How to convince someone on the validity of the statement without revealing any details? In the first place, what is the use of such a a 'proof'? What are the challenges involved in designing such a proof? This talk attempts to explain in a simple and accessible manner. The prerequisites for this talk are pen, paper, a bit of enthusiasm and curiosity.

Title of the talk:
Opportunities for building a 100% Pure Free Software Business
Time: 14:00 -- 15:00
Date: 3rd March
Venue: Room 254
Abstract:
- There are still quite a few domains that are not being serviced by
Free Software. Almost all of them deal with replacing or inter-operating with proprietary software.
- The so-called "cloud computing" v/s free software war is far from
over. There are as many people who do not want to use hosted, online
SaaS solutions to common, every day problems. They want free software
solutions.
- So what are the opportunities? In which domains? Who are the
customers? How you can bootstrap your business developing free
software?
- What is 100% Pure Free Software? Why is it important?
So the talk is about some common problems that have been found and how that building Free Software could be one of the best ways of solving these problems. This as much about great technology as about a sound business proposition. The most disruptive
technologies and tools today and how they are all distributed under Free Software licenses will also be mentioned.
So the business proposition is two-fold: developing new free software solutions using existing free software tools and developing new tools / techniques as free software as well.
